While shopping for Subaru Legacys and Outbacks, I once had a dealer tell me he got 44MPG on a trip from somewhere like Cleveland to the Chicago suburbs where we live. I thought, "Sure, right, ugh huh..." So after, bying my gently used 2010 Legacy w/ 4 cyl and CVT,w/ 30K miles, I had a challenge on my hands driving back from my parents home in St. Louis to Chicago. If he could do it, I'd try it. I was the slowest thing on the highway that day over Thanksgiving. I kept a steady spead of between 52-55 mpg, trying to watch the tach more than the speed. The longer I went, the higher the mileage crept up. It seem like I would never make it to 44 mpg , but damn it I made it just as I got home- 44.4mpg! It took an extra hour to get home, but the challenge was worth it. Now my wife knows how to keep me from speeding. Just try to recreate my personal best!

I was torn between getting a manual transmission, which I have always preferred, or getting an automatic. The dealership didn't have any manual models on the lot and I learned that the automatics get better fuel economy than the standard shifts. That was enough convincing for me, I got the auto.

I have been very impressed with the auto-manual feature. My Legacy has paddle shifters on the steering wheel that allow you to control the car as if it were a standard shift. I use this all the time on the freeway. It's nice to put the car in "6th gear" (the quotations because the Legacy has specified RPM ranges versus actual gears with the CVT) and not have to worry about the automatic transmission shifting into passing gear while cruising up a hill.
